The last aircraft type transferred from Union Airways in 1934 to SAA was the larger Junkers W34. A single example was taken over from Union Airways by SAA. Like the earlier F.13 the W.34 continued Junkers trade mark of using corrugated aluminium for the airframe. It crashed at George on 16 November 1937. Union Airways had operated two aircraft, one being written off prior to the purchase as SAA in an accident. The W.34 was easily converted to carry freight if needed. When the Ju-52 came into service this aircraft 9along with the F.13’s) was relegated to mail carriage only.

Normal passenger load: 6

ZS-AEC Sir George Grey (originally named Aerial in Union Airways service.)

Modelling

The following kits have been produced over the years that will allow the modeller to build a model of this aircraft.

Fortunately for the modeller intent on building as many aircraft as possible of the early years of SAA, Special Hobby has a 1/72nd scale kit of the Junkers W-34Hi in their range. Be sure to acquire kit number 72086 for your SAA model. Note though that the exhaust pipe is different and is extended down the starboard fuselage.

 Colours

The aircraft appear to be basic natural metal overall with black cowlings. Registration codes and airline titles are in black.

Decals

At the time of writing no dedicated decals have been produced to allow the modeller to build an SAA operated aircraft.  As the aircraft has plain black registration codes and airline titles it should not be too difficult to reproduce them. The registration codes are also carried above and below the main wing.
